What Boston Red Sox’ Jarren Duran saw pitcher do before
CLEVELAND– Red Sox speedster Jarren Duran and 3rd base coach Kyle Hudson knew there was an opportunity to steal home once Guardians novice starter Doug Nikhazy decided to pitch from the windup rather of the stretch.
“Me and Huddy saw him mention to the third base umpire he was going to go from the windup,” Duran stated. “Me and Huddy, we started talking right now like, ‘I’m gon na go very first pitch here if he offers it to me.'”
Duran ended up being the very first Red Sox player with a straight steal of home considering that Jacoby Ellsbury did it precisely 16 years ago (April 26, 2009) against the Yankees. The leadoff player went 3-for-5 with a triple, three runs and 2 RBIs in the Red Sox’ 7-3 success over the Guardians in the 2nd game of a doubleheader Saturday.Cleveland won the first game, 5-4. The rubber game will be Sunday at 1:40 p.m.Duran took
a lead practically halfway down the 3rd base line before he removed and beat Nikhazy’s toss to the plate. Rafael Devers had just stepped to the plate for his at-bat after Duran hit an RBI triple in the third to make it 5-0.
“I had to make up for Seattle because I was farther down the line in Seattle and I didn’t go,” Duran stated. “But yeah, just to keep the offense going and trigger a little chaos and keep the momentum on our side was a big thing.”
Duran stole home two times in 2015 however neither were straight takes. He confirmed he last stole home straight up in the minor leagues.
“His decision,” supervisor Alex Cora stated. “The guy went from the windup and (3rd baseman José) Ramírez was playing deep. He’s done it before in the minor leagues. So he saw it and he removed.”
Cora said the Red Sox also saw Nikhazy go from the windup with runners on base previously in the game.
“I think it was the previous inning when he was fighting with command,” Cora said. “There were bases loaded. He was going from the stretch and then he went from the windup. And we noticed it. And right there he stated to go from the windup and (Duran) removed.”
