‘We delighted in coming here’

Everton manager Brian Sørensen stated that his side enjoyed their 2-0 triumph over Liverpool at Anfield regardless of not carrying out to their absolute best levels.

Katja Snoeijs and Karen Holmgaard got the goals as The Toffees completed a historical league double over The Reds.

When speaking to the media after the match, Everton boss Sørensen expressed his delight with another Merseyside derby success, this time on the soil of Liverpool.

“We delighted in coming here,” Sørensen stated. “I don’t think we played our finest game, most likely among the worst on the ball efficiencies, but defensively, I think we were strong.

“We took the objectives at the right minutes, so I’m pleased with that. It’s just great to be able to control a game out and know they have maybe a couple [of possibilities], but I still feel that Courtney [Brosnan] has those 9 out of 10 times, so well done by the group.”

The game saw Everton contest the very first Merseyside derby since the club’s takeover was completed in December and Sørensen confesses that he is delighted for the future.

He said “It’s been difficult in the last 2 years. We had no cash, we had to offer our finest players, had the thinnest team in the league by a mile and then we had key players heading out [hurt] it seems like weekly, nearly. We are here right now [in this great position] and I don’t believe anybody would have thought that 10 rounds earlier.

“For me, it’s almost trying to get some consistency, trying to develop and do some excellent finalizings that would assist in squad depth, but also quality because we need that if we want to compete in this league. I’m very delighted for the future.”

Only the Barclays Women’s Super League’s top-four have yielded less goals than Everton this season, a statistic that Sørensen is very proud of.

He stated “We have a good defensive record, 5th in the league, so we know we can always depend on that if all of the game doesn’t stream. I think we saw that a couple of times, we did play through them, but we want to be much better on that side [of the ball]

“It’s been a long season, people are exhausted and we still have a lot of great players who are not in the squad, so credit to the women for coming here and getting the win.”

Everton’s final game of the 2024/2025 Barclays Women’s Super League season is against Tottenham Hotspur at Walton Hall Park on Saturday afternoon.
