Twins rocked by Rockies, drop series to group with MLB’s
DENVER– On Friday, the Twins fell victim to a pitcher, Kyle Freeland, whose 10 losses were tied for third-most in the majors. On Saturday, they lost to his colleague, Antonio Senzatela, a starter who boasts a league-leading 13 losses.
A series against the Colorado Rockies that looked like it would provide a soft part of the schedule for the Twins has actually developed into anything but. The Twins lost their 2nd straight game to the Rockies on Saturday night, this one a 10-6 defeat at Coors Field. With it, the Rockies, who are threatening the 2024 Chicago White Sox for the worst record in Big league Baseball history, won their first series in your home all season.
“The bottom line is we have actually got to play better baseball and we have not had the ability to do that regularly this year,” shortstop Carlos Correa said. “There’s 60-something games left and we’ve got to figure a method to put ourselves in a much better position. And everybody in this clubhouse, coaching personnel, everybody in here, we have actually got to do much better. We’re refraining from doing a great task.”
2 losses to a group that recently is back to 50 games under.500 makes sure proof of that.
Colorado broke open a connected game in the fifth inning after starter Zebby Matthews, fresh off the hurt list, enabled a pair of hits to the first two batters of the inning, resulting in his departure. Brock Stewart was summoned from the bullpen to change him and, after getting 2 outs, the very first pitch he tossed to Ezequiel Tovar ended up over the head of a jumping Byron Buxton beyond the center field wall, providing Colorado a three-run lead.
The Rockies (24-74) pressed throughout another pair of runs an inning later on and two more in the eighth. Most of their 10-run outburst featured 2 outs.
“We were so close to getting out of it and then quit a huge swing or whatnot,” catcher Ryan Jeffers said. “There were a great deal of baserunners today. The reality of playing here is a great deal of things falls. You’re going to have traffic and we just didn’t get out of it.”
The Rockies’ special day came in a game in which the Twins (47-51) did little throughout the middle innings. After scoring 3 runs in the second– Jeffers doubled, Kody Clemens tripled him home, Correa’s double scored another run and Matt Wallner gathered just his 3rd hit with a runner in scoring position all season to generate the Twins’ 3rd run– Twins hitters saw fewer than 10 pitches in each of the next four innings.
Senzatela threw eight pitches in the third, 7 in the 4th and simply six in each of the next 2 frames. The Twins’ possible opportunities were compressed in two of those innings by double plays.
“We got truly aggressive,” manager Rocco Baldelli stated. “Can overaggressiveness be just feeling yourself a little and wanting to do more and just trying to get huge rather of being pleased striking hard disks, which we did? … It’s something to do it for an inning. It’s another thing to keep it for the whole outing that a starter’s out there and we needed to be better for longer.”
While the Twins did make some noise in the eighth– Clemens brought home two more runs with a double– their hazard concerned an end when Correa swung at a Tyler Kinley slider for strike 3. And in the bottom of the inning, Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman hit a two-run crowning achievement to extend Colorado’s lead again.
Matthews, in his first big league start given that landing on the hurt list with a shoulder stress in early June, quit 5 runs in the loss. The very first came in the second inning. Two more can be found in the 3rd, with Jordan Beck, who gathered an infield struck on a ball that appeared to be rolling foul before catcher Ryan Jeffers chose it up, scoring on Ryan McMahon’s game-tying crowning achievement. The last two followed his departure, when Stewart quit the home run that put the Twins down for great.
“It’s going to be challenging when you give up a three-run crowning achievement, two-run home run, two-run home run,” Baldelli said. “We have to discover method to simply avoid that. That’s what the game boils down to a great deal of the times and they had the big swings.”
