FAMU AD accused of taking $24K from old task

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.– Florida A&M University athletic director Angela Suggs was detained Monday on fraud and theft charges for supposedly utilizing a corporate charge card for individual use totaling more than $24,000 at her former job.Suggs, 55, turned herself in and was scheduled at the Leon County Jail. She was later on released on a $13,500 bond.She was charged with two felonies: grand theft and scheme to defraud. She also was charged with 4 misdemeanor counts of false claims on travel vouchers.The Florida Department of Police stated Suggs made wire transfers, cash withdrawals and personal purchases at casinos during business journeys while she was the CEO of the Florida Sports Foundation.The examination began last November after the FDLE got a criminal recommendation from the Florida Department of Commerce’s Inspector General, which audited Suggs’company charge card purchases and corresponding travel reimbursements at the FSF. The FSF is a direct-support company operating under the Florida Department of Commerce.The audit revealed that Suggs falsified travel vouchers by coding the unapproved charges as meals, according to the FDLE.

When inquired about the unapproved charges, Suggs claimed some were for company meals and others were accidentally charged to the business card. She failed to completely repay FSF for her individual expenditures, the FDLE said.FAMU Interim President Timothy Beard stated in a declaration that the university knows the accusations linked to her deal with a”previous company.

“”While the matter is unassociated to her tasks as an employee at FAMU, we are keeping an eye on the situation and will respond in the future as appropriate,”

Beard said.There was no lawyer listed in prison records for Suggs, who in April employed 1993 Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward as the school’s guys’s basketball coach.
