Cooper DeJean might play more at safety, less at cornerback
Cooper DeJean is generally called a cornerback, however on the Eagles’ lineup he’s just listed as a protective back, and Philadelphia defensive coordinator Vic Fangio states DeJean could easily discover himself getting more snaps at safety this season.
“We wish to keep him at nickel, and after that in our base package we’ll discover an area for him, either at corner or safety,” Fangio said of DeJean. “A lot of it will wind up depending on how the other guys establish and where we most require him. It will be figured out by what’s best for him and what’s best for the team– and what’s best for the group will win out because choice. But he’s capable of playing corner and he can playing security.”
Fangio said DeJean has all the tools to play safety if that’s what the Eagles need him to do.
“I believe he would play extremely well at safety. I think it fits his capability, things that he does well. I simply believe he would do effectively therein,” Fangio said.Fangio said the media focus excessive on the base defense, which isn’t even what the Eagles line up in most of the time, and stated it’s not about whether you call DeJean a safety, a corner or a nickel, it’s about putting the 11 best players on the field and putting DeJean anywhere the group requires him one of the most. Fangio pointed out wanting DeJean and the other players in the secondary to contend in the coming months.”It’s going to take a training camp, a couple of preseason games to work that out,” Fangio stated.
