In between everyone I know who lives for Michigan and Ohio State football, I have not had time to deal with the freak-out factor from all my Georgia pals stressing over a gag.
Georgia is excellent at college football, and it’s fine
When did we stop liking remarkable sports teams?
I get it. There’s a knee-jerk response versus rooting for anything to do with the SEC.
From the “It Just Means More” motto– loose Latin translation: we do not have sufficient meaningful pro sports in our part of the country– to all the success throughout the years, to handling the blowhards when bold to mention even the smallest flaw, it’s easy to want anyone else to win the College Football Playoff National Championship.
But there’s one key thing missing when it pertains to the rise of the Georgia Bulldogs under Kirby Smart: credit.
It wasn’t a given that Georgia would be this good. It wasn’t a given that it would lastly overcome the hump and win the nationwide title in 2015, and it definitely wasn’t a considered that it would get to LA this season, much less be the prohibitive favorite after losing an impressive class of players to the NFL.
And it sure as shoot wasn’t a provided when Ohio State had it against the ropes for a complete 60 minutes of an impressive Chick-fil-A Bowl.
Yes, of course Georgia is seen as the huge, bad, SEC program after years of great recruiting and developing the skill level, but Smart gets credit for that. That’s it. That’s the game. Generate great skill, coach everything up, and bring in more. That’s how it works.

Texas was one USC initially down away from still being the program that’s done the least with the most.
Tennessee and Florida State are just returning up to speed. Florida had a losing season. USC and Penn State have yet to be in the College Football Playoff. Oklahoma, Michigan and Notre Dame have yet to win a game in this thing. And after that there’s Nebraska– it’s tough to get to the College Football Playoff when you can’t get bowl eligible.
Before pulling it off last year, Georgia had not won a championship game since 1980– its fan base hasn’t had time yet to become insufferable. But Smart did it. He built off all the close-but-not-quite success of the Mark Richt era and took it up a couple of notches with packing recruiting classes, lots of wins, and an entire lot of hard calls, especially at quarterback.
Georgia did the work, it got the job done, and now it’s being depicted as Goliath in this College Football Playoff Championship game narrative.
First, seriously, Goliath. It’s a rock– D up or duck. Second, and I can’t reveal this point forcefully enough …
TCU IS A POWER FIVE PROGRAM.
I can’t tell you the number of times over the last couple of weeks I’ve needed to fix those who accuse me of a being a Power Five snob– which I totally am– because I chose Michigan to whack TCU and now believe Georgia is going to roll.
Picking USC to rip through Tulane– that’s full-on snobbery. TCU? No, it’s not as big as Georgia. No, it doesn’t have all the exact same advantages. Yes, it’s become part of the Big 12 because 2012.
TCU went 13-0 and won the Rose Bowl in among its ins 2015 in the Mountain West. It got hosed more difficult than any group in the nine-year history of the College Football Playoff after completing 3rd in the 2014 penultimate rankings and getting bounced out in the final version.
The program has won five of its last 6 bowl looks, created ten 11-win seasons given that 2005, has completed ninth or much better in 6 AP polls considering that 2008, and …
Yeah, it’s a great story after going 23-24 in the 4 years before Sonny Dykes took control of, and yeah, it’s doing with a lot of players who ‘d have a difficult time cracking the Georgia two-deep. However it’s here, making it the most accomplished college football program in Texas during the College Football Playoff era.

It’s alright to cheer for that. It’s fine to cheer for a group that lost the majority of its key beginners to the NFL last season. It’s okay to cheer for Georgia to win this.
