H.S. Baseball: Holy Redeemer transfers to District 2 Class 2A

Listen to this WILKES-BARRE– The first inning was rather forgettable for Holy Redeemer pitcher Drew Cisney.

He hit the first batter. Tweaked a neck muscle on the second batter. Strolled 3. Given up an RBI double. Permitted two hits and 2 runs.

The rest of Friday’s early afternoon District 2 Class 2A baseball semifinal game was quite unforgettable.

Cisney permitted just one hit after the very first inning and ended up with 11 strikeouts as Redeemer beat Wyoming Academy 6-2.

Redeemer (18-4) advanced to the championship game on Wednesday, although that date could alter. A quarterfinal game between Holy Cross and Elk Lake was held off Friday and moved to Saturday. If the title game remains on Wednesday, it will be an early start given that Redeemer has graduation that night.

Cisney strung together 11 successive outs before departing after 6 innings. Zach Schultz worked a 1-2-3 seventh.

“I have actually been having neck issues since that WA game,” stated Cisney, describing a game against Wyoming Area 8 days earlier. “It started beginning in the back of my head once again. So I needed to speak with the coach, see what’s up. Maybe I’ll come out, maybe not. I simply wanted to hammer out for my young boys.”

Cisney’s kids removed the 2-0 deficit in the bottom of the first. Cody Quaglia strolled to lead off and Cisney reached on a bunt single. An out later on, Alex Gordon crushed a two-run double to the fence in left-center field.

An RBI single by Cisney in the second offered Redeemer a 3-2 lead.

Redeemer built its lead to 6-2 in the third inning. Jett Kelsall bounced an RBI single up the middle and Jack Hurst included a two-run single simply out of the reach of Seminary shortstop Leo Nockley.

“We were aggressive, we stole bases, we put the ball on the ground, we compromised, we bunted for a hit,” Redeemer coach Ryan Knowles said. “All that adds up to a good triumph there.”

Academy (14-7) had its first 5 batters reach base to start the game, yet netted just two runs. Antek Evan sliced an RBI double simply inside the left field foul line for one run. Alec Weinberger walked with the bases packed for the other.

After that, Nockley led off the 3rd with a single to right for the Blue Knights’ only other hit and baserunner of the game.
