Alley preparing to browse roster turnover as the transfer portal

West Virginia protective organizer Zac Alley is preparing for more lineup volatility following completion of spring practice, and he knows the portal will work both methods as he continues to build his defense.

Saturday represented completion of WVU’s spring practice, but it’s simply the start of what’s to come for the Mountaineers lineup. And that is currently underway.

“We’ll assess the group, clearly, from the spring, we’ll enjoy this movie and sort of the last opportunity for guys to make an impression. We’ll figure it out from there, depending upon the numbers. I’m sure some guys will enter the website we weren’t expecting. We might have a variety of modifications that we’re not prepared for, per se. However we’ll clearly go out and resolve the needs in the website once that takes place,” Alley stated.

Part of dealing with the transfer portal is first finding out who is entering to leave WVU and what other guys elsewhere around the country are hitting the website too.

“A great deal of guys reveal early, you know, on Twitter that they’re entering the portal when it opens,” Street stated.

The next step is the examination piece, targeting who they wish to get in the portal and begin to pursue those guys.

“You examine those guys, figure out who you wish to target and, you understand, we’ll have to go after them hard when the portal opens. And then you kind of know, I would say in the back of my mind, you know, I know that, hello, there may be some attrition here, perhaps some attrition there. Therefore we’ll be taking a look at those particular positions to change them, you understand, but that’s to be determined, you understand, type of over the next number of weeks,” Street said.

After the window closes, Alley’s attention then turns to discovering methods to schematically put guys in the proper position to make plays.

“You know, you think players, not plays, you understand, put guys in position to be successful. Based on who’s on the group and what they succeed. If a guy doesn’t do something well, do not ask him to do that and I believe we’ve done an excellent task of that traditionally in this defense of putting guys in positions to win. So when we have actually type of settled the lineup down after completion of the website window and get to summertime, we’ll begin making a few of those decisions,” Street said.
