MWC 2024 sneak peek: Boise State and Fresno State are the

  • Expense Connelly, ESPN Staff WriterJun 18, 2024, 07:30 AM ET Close Expense Connelly is a staff author for ESPN.com.There’s a lot of brand-new in the Mountain West this year. Six of the conference’s 12 groups have new head coaches, and eight will have new beginning quarterbacks, some more promising than others. There are two new pseudo-members, too: Though Oregon State and Washington State have not joined the MWC(and are for that reason not in this sneak peek), they have entered into a scheduling plan with the conference. As we dive further into this brand-new era of college football– with particularly devastating conference realignment relocations, NIL money, heavier transfer volume and a newly expanded College Football Playoff– it feels like the MWC is looking for its location. It hasn’t produced the very best Group of 5 team in nine seasons (according to the CFP committee ), but with new members comes new opportunity. The AAC has actually been damaged by recent realignment moves, and while the Sun Belt grades out as the very best Group of 5 conference, per SP+, the MWC has 2 stalwart competitors (Boise State and Fresno State)and, UNLV, an exciting up-and-comer. Can among these groups catch the G5’s guaranteed playoff area? Can some of the new members find immediate success and bring a little bit more depth back to what is now the only FBS conference based in the west?Let’s sneak peek the Mountain West!Every week through the summertime, Expense Connelly will preview another FBS conference exclusively for ESPN +, eventually consisting of all 134 FBS groups.

The previews will include 2023 breakdowns, 2024 previews and team-by-team capsules. Here are the MAC, Conference USA and AAC previews.Jump to a section:2024 forecasts|Best games Title competitors|Who’s close?Hoping for 6-6 2023 recap GROUP REC.

14.6(128)37.0 (127) 0.4 (58 ) We saw rather the midseason plot twist in 2023. Flying force began the season 8-0, combining a particularly strong option attack with another exceptional defense and putting itself in position to maybe snag
the G5’s New Year’s 6 bowl quote . Fresno State, meanwhile, began 8-1; with Boise State stumbling to a 4-5
start and shooting head coach Andy Avalos, it looked pretty clear that we were travelling towards a Falcons-Bulldogs MWC champion game.Air Force quarterback Zac Larrier got harmed, nevertheless, and the Flying force offense ground to a halt during a four-game losing
streak. Fresno State lost 3 in a row while collapsing similarly on offense and defense. Boise State rose from the dead
to win three directly, and new coach Barry Odom’s UNLV Rebels sneaked up on everyone, winning 8 of nine at one point. Out of nowhere, we had

a BSU-UNLV title game, and Boise interim coach Spencer Danielson ended up making the full-time task with a 44-20 blowout of the Rebels. Per the SP +rankings, BSU and Air Force ended up practically equivalent, though the previous had to rise into the 40s while the latter fell there.
